Amtrak said in a Facebook post that “the Ocean View is a Great Dome Car, and the only remaining dome car in Amtrak Service.” The dome section runs its full length, a rare feature, even when dome cars were more numerous on the nation’s railroads. BOSTON  — Advocacy groups have sued Hulu in an effort to force the subscription streaming service to provide an audio track that helps people who are blind or visually impaired enjoy TV shows and movies. The federal lawsuit filed in Boston on Monday asks the court to declare that Hulu’s failure to provide services for the blind violates the Americans without Disabilities Act. The groups say Hulu has refused to do so despite repeated requests from advocates and blind customers. […]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Baylor was stuck on the same point total for so long Monday night that coach Scott Drew thought about strolling over to the scorer’s table and punching the button to change it himself. Nobody on the court seemed to be doing it for him. But despite going the final 8 minutes, 43 seconds without a field goal, the No. 22 Bears somehow managed to hang on to beat Wisconsin 70-65. They blew most of a 19-point […]

An old study is now shedding new light on the sugar industry’s controversial past, and its secrets are being revealed in a new paper. The 1960s study, which suggests a link between a high-sugar diet and high blood cholesterol levels and cancer in rats, was sponsored by the sugar industry, according to the perspective paper published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday. Yet the study itself was never published and has been forgotten until now. “All we know is that the plug got […]

On October 19, the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii spotted something strange zooming through our solar system. It turned out to be a visitor from beyond our solar system, and it’s unlike anything astronomers have seen before. It is the first observed object from outside our solar system, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature — and, as the researchers call it, an “oddball.” At first, astronomers thought the rapidly moving faint light was a comet or an asteroid […]

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is using his pardon power to keep a pair of turkeys from the Thanksgiving roaster. Pres. Trump continued the annual presidential tradition during an event Tuesday in the White House Rose Garden. The act of leniency means 47-pound Drumstick and 36-pound Wishbone will instead get to live the rest of their lives at a Virginia farm. First lady Melania Trump and son Barron joined the president for the light-hearted ceremony. The White House sought public […]

WASHINGTON — Decades after they were banned from the airwaves, Big Tobacco companies return to prime-time television this weekend — but not by choice. Under court order, the tobacco industry for the first time will be forced to advertise the deadly, addictive effects of smoking, more than 11 years after a judge ruled that the companies had misled the public about the dangers of cigarettes. But years of legal pushback by the industry over every detail means the ads will […]

NEW YORK — CBS News fired morning show host Charlie Rose on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after several women who worked with him on his PBS interview show alleged a pattern of sexual misconduct, including groping and walking naked in front of them. The network’s news president, David Rhodes, said there is nothing more important than assuring a safe, professional workplace. To date, there have been no accusations of bad behavior by Rose from people who work at CBS […]

CHICAGO — Attempted suicides, drug overdoses, cutting and other types of self-injury have increased substantially in U.S. girls, a 15-year study of emergency room visits found. It’s unclear why, but some mental health experts think cyberbullying, substance abuse and economic stress from the recent recession might be contributing. The rising rates “should be of concern to parents, teachers, and pediatricians. One important reason to focus on reducing self-harm is that it is key risk factor for suicide,” said Dr. Mark […]
